Introduction

  • The basis of the Teochew Phonetic is in accordiance with "Scheme of the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet" of The People's Republic of China.

    However, there are variations of pronunciation in different geographic areas and places, this phonetic scheme is standardized with reference to the dialect being spoken in downtown Shantow.

    Changing of tones when speaking is a very common phenomenon found in almost all languages, so do Teochew. It is accustomed that there are 6 tones out of 8 tones shall change tone when speaking, except these words are placed at the end of a vocabulary or a sentence, with general pattern as follows:
